See the full story here: Autumn & Winter RoadmapĬomplete a new time-limited Halloween survival mission! Available until November 2nd 2021, players must defend their castle from increasingly difficult waves of mythical AI invasion. There is an exciting future ahead for Stronghold and we can’t wait to share our plans, for now however please enjoy these new updates! We hope you’ve enjoyed our eight updates so far and look forward to our remaining plans for Warlords development in the Autumn and Winter period. This includes new AI opponents, further increasing our map count and more single player content in the form of our longest Skirmish Trail yet! There are a few other community-requested features on the horizon, however we’ll keep those as a surprise… So for our final roadmap we’re doubling down on our most popular post-release content. While we have many exciting ideas and ambitions for the future of the series (more on that as it happens), we still have plenty of dry gunpowder when it comes to new Warlords updates.

That is of course with the news that we’ll be turning our eye to the future of Stronghold, after our final Warlords update has been released.ĭuring development and in the year post-release we’ve made a number of improvements and adjustments to Warlords, working with the community to launch and iterate on our latest castle sim. As with our previous two content roadmaps, today’s reveal shows the updates you can look forward to in the coming months and the general order in which you can expect them. Considering Steam still causes a bit of controversy among people I know, though, this might wind up sparking a few flames. It’s finally here! Our Autumn and Winter content roadmap for Stronghold: Warlords has been revealed and with it new AI lords, maps, fixes, optimisations, skirmish trail missions and warlords. Seems fair enough to me, though I’m not an anti-Steam person – the service makes my life a hell of a lot easier. I mean, who would force players to be online when playing a strategy sim? That would be crazy!

Please Note: it will still be possible to run the Steam client in offline mode and play Crusader 2 without being connected to the internet. Amusingly, they used this opportunity to take a potshot at what is almost certainly SimCity: The game will always run through Steam, but you don’t have to buy it through Steam.įor the developers, this means that they don’t have to worry about DRM, they don’t have to spend huge amounts of time working on things like voice chat and game invites, and they’ll have less issue releasing patches/DLC/etc.

While this is sufficient to build the game, using Steam makes it a whole lot easier to get a number of secondary features done.įor players, then, the advantages are that the game will still be done in 2014 (as less time has to be devoted to making other features work) it’ll have a host of secondary features (achievements, voice chat, cloud saving, game invites, Workshop integration, etc.) because they’re apparently quite easy to sort out in Steam it’ll be easy to patch and update (because Steam auto-updates to the latest version, and the devs will only have to update one build) and… well, I’m not sure this is an advantage for the players, but there’ll still be a physical box. For the majority of the project, the team has comprised “two full-time programmers and two artists”, with members of the Stronghold Kingdoms team pitching in whenever possible.
The big one, really, is that the team has a very limited amount of manpower. In a blog post on the official website, Firefly Studios have announced that Stronghold Crusader 2 will run exclusively through Steam.
